Relocation to Georgia
A fair, territorial tax model and a crypto advantage for private individuals. A chosen home for people who want to decide their own tax residency — with or without a minimum stay.
Citizens of around 95 countries — including the EU, UK and US — may stay in Georgia visa-free for a full year: simply enter, sign a rental contract, get started. Foreign income (dividends, interest, crypto gains via foreign exchanges) remains tax-free for private individuals — even without a formal tax ID registration. A TIN with the Revenue Service is optional and only useful if you have Georgian-source income or need the tax residency certificate.
Why Georgia as Your Chosen Home?
If you live in a country that taxes worldwide income — Germany, Austria, the UK and most of the OECD — every euro or dollar you earn anywhere is taxed at home. Georgia works differently: only Georgian sources are taxed; everything else is exempt for private individuals (Art. 82 Tax Code). This is not a loophole — it is the statutory base rule of the territorial tax system Georgia has promoted since its economic reforms of 2003.
What Stays Tax-Free as a Private Individual
-
Foreign dividends
Distributions from shareholdings in foreign companies (German GmbH, US corp, UK Ltd, …) are fully tax-free for private individuals.
-
Crypto via foreign exchanges
Trading gains and hodl sales via Binance, Kraken, Bitstamp & Co. count as foreign income — 0% income tax, 0% VAT. Staking rewards, airdrops and lending interest are not covered and need case-by-case review.
-
Rental income from abroad
Rental income from properties in your home country is not taxed in Georgia (the property country may still tax it under the applicable treaty — we coordinate).
-
Securities income from foreign brokers
Capital gains from shares, bonds and ETFs in a foreign brokerage account (IBKR, Schwab, Trade Republic …) — tax-free as foreign-source income.
-
Foreign pensions
State and private pensions from third countries are typically not taxable in Georgia — treaty provisions need to be checked case by case.
-
Georgian sources — low rate
What you earn *in* Georgia is taxed at the 20% standard rate — or optionally under the 1% status for solopreneurs below 500,000 GEL revenue.

- The funded pension scheme covers Georgian citizens and holders of a permanent residence permit (Art. 1(4)). It does not apply to you.
- Georgia levies no other social contributions — no health, no unemployment insurance.
- Rental income, dividends, interest and capital gains do not count toward the 500,000 GEL threshold (Decree N415 Annex 5) — they cannot cost you the 1% status.

Tax Residency — the Practice Is Simpler Than the Theory
The internet is full of complicated explanations about 183-day rules, HNWI programmes and residence registrations. In practice it is much simpler: citizens of the ~95 visa-waiver countries enter without a visa, live in Georgia for a year and extend if needed. Foreign income is tax-free for private individuals anyway. A formal registration with the Revenue Service is optional — not a must.
Path 1: Just come and stay
You enter, rent an apartment, live in Georgia. No formal steps. As long as you generate no Georgian-source income, there is simply nothing to declare.
- Visa-free for 1 year for citizens of ~95 countries (incl. EU, UK, US) — no visa, no application, just enter
- Extension when needed by exiting and re-entering
- Foreign dividends, interest, crypto trading gains via foreign exchanges: 0% in Georgia as a private individual — even without formal tax registration
- Tax residency arises automatically after 183 days of presence within any 12-month period
Useful for: everyone who simply wants to move without dealing with bureaucracy.
Perpetual travel with a fixed base — for those who stay 183 days nowhere
A growing share of our clients does not want to live permanently in one place but to change country regularly — without slipping into local tax liability anywhere. That works, but not the way it is described in the relevant forums. Anyone counting only the days in each host country is tracking exactly one of three counters, and the one that is least often the problem.
That is precisely why Georgia is the right base for this way of living: it provides a documented residency that generates no tax burden of its own. Foreign income remains exempt for residents (Art. 82 Tax Code), around 95 nationalities may stay visa-free for 365 days, and residency arises after 183 days in any twelve-month period — not in the calendar year and not consecutively. The rotation then runs not against Georgia but around it: half a year as a base, half a year in the world.
What has to line up is the evidence. Banks, CRS self-certifications, payment providers and every double tax treaty ask for a country of residence, not an itinerary — and the Georgian tax number does not answer that question. For that you need the tax residency certificate, which the Revenue Service issues only once the 183 days are met or HNWI status applies. The full sequence, including calendar and record keeping, is described in Perpetual traveller: counting 183 days is not enough; why the variant with no residency at all is the worst of them is in Statelessness is not a solution.
Residence Options — Visa, Residence Permit, Passport
-
1-year visa waiver
Citizens of ~95 countries (incl. EU, UK, US) may enter Georgia for **up to 365 days** without a visa. That is enough for 183-day residency without needing a residence permit.
-
Residence permit via investment
For those who want to stay long-term: a temporary (short-term) residence permit via property investment from **USD 150,000** (since March 2026; previously USD 100,000), business activity or family reunification. The higher investment tier from USD 300,000 leads to the Investment Residence Permit. We coordinate the application.
-
Permanent residence after 6 years
After 6 years as a resident (or 5 years under extended conditions) you can apply for permanent residence — with a path to citizenship (10 years).
-
Visa-free travel follows your passport
A Georgian residence permit gives **no** additional visa-free access to third countries — you keep travelling on your existing passport. Georgian citizenship (after 10 years) opens ~120 countries visa-free.

-
Initial call & path analysis
Free 30-minute call. We review your home-country starting position (residence, shareholdings, exit tax risk) and recommend the right residency variant (183-day vs. HNWI vs. hybrid).
-
Structure your exit from home cleanly
Exit taxation — e.g. Germany’s §6 AStG as a prominent example — plus deregistration duties and trailing tax liabilities exist in many countries. We analyse and structure so that no avoidable taxes are triggered, together with a tax adviser in your home country. Detailed articles in the [blog](/en/blog/).
-
GE residence and bank account
Registration in Georgia (address, tax number), opening a Georgian personal account at TBC or Bank of Georgia, residence permit (if desired). Parallel LLC formation optional.
-
Tax residency application and certificate
With a Georgian residence + personal TIN registration at the Revenue Service you obtain the tax residency certificate on application — your proof to home authorities that your centre of life has moved. With an additional I/E registration the status is doubly anchored.
-
Ongoing operations
Annual tax declaration (formal — territorial logic usually keeps it very short), connection to our bookkeeping if you have Georgian-source income. We remain your contact for home-country coordination.
Everything from one hand — the relocation service
A move to Georgia rarely fails on the tax. It fails because roughly forty separate errands sit between the decision and your first ordinary morning in the new flat — forwarding, customs, property search, lease, bank, cards, electricity, internet, tax number — each in a particular order and some of them in Georgian. Coordinating that on the side, from inside your old life, costs weeks of waiting time nobody announced in advance.
That is why this service comes in three tiers. The legal route is identical in all three — exit, registration, residence, tax residency certificate. What differs is how much of the move stays with you.
-
Household goods and personal belongings
We coordinate the shipment from Europe with our forwarding partner and handle the import formalities. **Freight and any import duties you pay directly to the forwarder** — we do not fold third-party costs into our fee when their size depends on volume, route and declared value.
-
A home, up to the handover of keys
Search to your brief, viewings — by video while you are still abroad — review and negotiation of the lease, handover, registration of electricity, water and internet. **Rent, deposit and agency commission** you pay directly; you choose the flat, not us.
-
Bank account and cards
A personal account at one bank — TBC or Bank of Georgia — debit and credit cards, online banking set up and working. A second account at a further bank is possible and quoted separately.
-
Reachable for three months
Chat and phone, with no hourly billing. The questions that come up in the first weeks are rarely large, but they come daily: which doctor, which mobile contract, what does this letter want, how does the rubbish collection work.
-
Government appointments up to the TIN
Address registration, Revenue Service registration, personal tax number, and the tax residency certificate on application. **Company formation and the corporate tax number are a separate engagement** — that is [company formation](/en/company-formation/).
-
A properly structured exit
Before anything happens in Georgia, the home side is checked: exit taxation under section 6 AStG, the Austrian second-residence question, extended limited tax liability. That order is not negotiable — much of it can only be resolved beforehand.

Frequently Asked Questions — Relocation to Georgia
Can I be a perpetual traveller and still stay a Georgian tax resident?
Yes — by two routes, and the choice is a question of lifestyle, not of tax. The standard route is 183 days in any 12-month period: Georgia becomes the base, with travel in between. Anyone who does not want to be in Georgia at all can reach residency only through the HNWI programme with its asset, income and property thresholds. Decisive in both cases: the connecting factors in the home country must be demonstrably dissolved. German residence under § 8 AO has no minimum stay — an available dwelling is enough; in Austria a second home is harmless only under the three conditions of the Zweitwohnsitzverordnung, including no more than 70 days of use and a register kept of them.
Is the Georgian tax number enough as proof for banks and my country of departure?
No — this is the most consequential confusion in the model. The Tax Identification Number is an identifier the Revenue Service issues almost immediately; it says nothing about residency. What banks require at onboarding, what the CRS self-certification asks for and what every double tax treaty presupposes is the tax residency certificate, and that is issued only once the 183 days are met or HNWI status applies. Anyone mistaking one for the other notices not at the tax office but at the first account opening — or years later, when the country of departure asks where you were resident in the meantime.
Do I have to give up my residence in my home country?
For the full tax effect: yes. As long as you keep a residence or habitual abode in a country that taxes worldwide income, you generally remain fully tax-liable there — Georgian tax residency then only mitigates double taxation, it does not remove the home burden. German example: a genuine exit from German taxation requires giving up the German residence AND avoiding a habitual abode of more than 6 months. Similar rules exist in Austria, Switzerland, the UK and elsewhere — check your home-country rules with a local adviser.
What about exit taxation (e.g. Germany’s §6 AStG)?
German example: leaving Germany while holding at least 1% in a corporation can trigger tax on a fictitious capital gain, and since 2022 deferral options for moves to non-EEA countries are heavily restricted. Many other countries have comparable exit tax regimes. We structure BEFORE the move — typical routes: holding structures, staged relocation, transfers within the family — always together with a home-country tax adviser. In the initial call we estimate the magnitude of your specific case.
Are foreign dividends really 0%?
Yes, for private individuals with Georgian tax residency. Art. 82 Tax Code exempts foreign income of residents. That covers dividends from German GmbHs, US corps, UK Ltds etc. Note: foreign withholding tax at source usually remains (e.g. dividend withholding in the paying country, potentially reduced under the applicable treaty) — Georgia levies nothing on top.
Crypto — really 0% even with active trading?
Yes, as long as the trades run through *foreign* exchanges (Binance, Kraken, Coinbase, Bitstamp …) and you trade as a private individual, not as a registered business activity in Georgia. No threshold, no holding period, no tax. Crypto mining or VASP activity (registered business operations) follow different rules — we discuss your use case in the initial call.
What does the relocation setup cost in practice?
Three tiers, all three directly bookable. **Formalities (€1,190):** exit structuring, Revenue Service registration, personal TIN, address registration, support with the ongoing registrations and the tax residency certificate. **Arrival (€2,490):** adds the personal bank account at one bank including cards and online banking, plus three months of concierge support by chat and phone. **One-stop shop (€4,990):** adds coordination of your household goods with our forwarding partner, the import formalities, and the property search, lease negotiation and handover of keys. Not included are pass-through third-party costs: freight and any import duties, plus rent, deposit and agency commission. On top of any tier: residence permit application from €800, the HNWI route from €3,490 plus €1,290 for the annual renewal.
What exactly do you handle in the one-stop shop — and what stays with me?
We handle everything that can be delegated: the government appointments up to your personal tax number, opening the account and issuing the cards, coordinating the shipment of household goods and personal belongings from Europe, the customs formalities on import, the property search to your brief including viewings — by video while you are still abroad — reviewing and negotiating the lease, the handover of keys, registering electricity, water and internet, and a first grocery run so the flat is liveable on the day you arrive. For three months we are reachable by chat and phone, with no hourly billing. What stays with you are the decisions and the third-party costs: you choose the flat, you sign the lease, and you pay freight, duties, rent and deposit directly. Company formation and the corporate tax number are a separate engagement — see [company formation](/en/company-formation/).
Do I get visa-free travel with Georgian residence?
No. Visa-free travel follows your **passport**, not your residence permit. You keep travelling on your existing passport. Only Georgian citizenship (at the earliest after 10 years of legal residence) gives access to the ~120 visa-free countries of the Georgian passport.
Do I need a work permit in Georgia?
Since 1 March 2026, foreigners without permanent residence generally need a Special Labour Activity Permit for gainful activity in Georgia. But Law N1509 (in force since 15 April 2026) exempts exactly the typical relocation scenario: those working remotely for non-residents or foreign clients need no permit. Those working locally for Georgian clients or taking Georgian employment may need one — we check this in the initial call.
When is relocating to Georgia really worth it?
If you (a) have significant foreign income (dividends from your own foreign company, crypto wealth, foreign rental or securities income), (b) enjoy a capital-city lifestyle with Western infrastructure at a fraction of the cost, and (c) are prepared to spend at least 183 days within a 12-month period in Georgia (or meet the HNWI thresholds). Keeping your home residence and trying to capture only the Georgian benefits fails against your home country’s worldwide taxation.
How do I combine relocation with a Georgian LLC?
The classic combination: a **GE LLC** as the operating vehicle for your own business (Estonian model, 1% status or 15% corporate tax on distributions) **+ relocation as a private individual** for the dividend distributions. You pay 5% Georgian withholding tax on dividends to resident individuals — after that the amount is finally settled in Georgia. Effective total burden: well below 20%. See our company formation service for the setup.
