The industry likes to present an account opening as settled once the invoice is paid. But the bank decides, not the provider — and it decides on criteria that can be prepared for. This article describes them, because an honest assessment beforehand is worth more than a promise.
Three questions every bank wants answered
| Check | What the bank wants to know | Where it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Who you are | identity, nationality, residence, political exposure | identity documents without current proof of address, inconsistencies between form and records |
| Where the money comes from what is not documented does not exist for the review | a traceable origin of the funds intended for the account | the origin is clean but cannot be evidenced — by far the most common case |
| Why this account | a plausible reason for an account in Georgia specifically | no visible link to the country, no business purpose, no activity |
What improves the odds
- Evidence the source of funds with records: statements, contracts, tax assessments
- Bring current proof of address in the form required
- Be able to name a concrete and truthful purpose
- Keep statements consistent across every form
- Keeping the origin vague to avoid questions
- Putting forward a company with no activity
What we do — and what we do not promise
We prepare the file, attend the appointment and know the institutions’ current requirements from live engagements. What we give in advance is an assessment of your profile. What we do not give is a guarantee — anyone offering one is selling a decision that is not theirs.
The process itself is described in Opening a bank account in Georgia.
Refusals — frequently asked
Will the bank tell me why it refused?
As a rule, no. Banks are not obliged to give reasons and generally do not, for supervisory reasons. That is unsatisfying but not particular to Georgia — it is the international standard.
Can I try another bank?
Yes, and often that is the right move. Institutions have different risk appetites and different experience with foreign clients. A refusal is a statement about fit with one bank, not about you.
Does forming a Georgian company help?
It changes the picture because it supplies a traceable reason for the account. It is not automatic, though: a company with no visible activity can make the review harder, because it raises a question that did not exist before.
What is the most common reason for refusal?
A source of funds that cannot be evidenced. Not because it is tainted but because the records are missing — old statements, sale contracts, tax assessments. What is not documented does not exist for the review.
