Deposit insurance is where a conversation about Georgian banking becomes honest. It exists, it has been markedly higher since April 2026 — and it still sits clearly below what an EU saver is used to. Knowing that beforehand produces a decision; learning it afterwards produces annoyance.
What the rule means in practice
The amount applies per depositor and institution, not per account. Holding three accounts at the same bank does not increase cover. Spreading the same balance across three banks does.
Setting up a larger balance
- Spread amounts above the ceiling across several licensed institutions
- Set the split against the lari ceiling, not the euro sum
- Allow a buffer for exchange-rate movement on foreign currency
- Treating several accounts at one bank as a spread
- Treating the cover as a substitute for examining the bank
What the cover does not do
It covers deposits. It does not cover exchange losses, securities held in custody, or claims arising from anything other than a deposit. And it does not make a weak institution strong — choosing the bank remains a separate decision.
Deposit insurance — frequently asked
Does the cover apply to non-residents?
Cover attaches to the deposit held with an institution licensed in Georgia, not to the depositor nationality or residence. For the detail, the bank itself is the right address.
Is the amount per account or per bank?
Per depositor and institution. Several accounts at the same bank do not increase cover — several banks do. That is the practical core of the rule.
Are foreign-currency balances covered?
The ceiling is defined in lari. With a balance in euro or dollars the amount actually covered therefore depends on the exchange rate — and that moves, as the article on the lari shows.
How does it compare with the EU?
EU deposit insurance stands at EUR 100,000 per depositor and institution. The Georgian figure sits well below it. That is no argument against a Georgian account, but it is one for spreading larger amounts.
